About the United Way  -  (from www.unitedway.org)

Mission
To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.

Vision
We (the United Way) will build a stronger America by mobilizing our communities to improve people’s lives.

What is the difference between allocation funding and donor designations?

Allocation funding is when an organization goes before a United Way committee or board and presents a proposal to the United Way asking the organization to fund that particular program. The United Way committee or board then decides whether or not to fund the program from the United Way general allocation funds.

Donor designation funding is when a person specifies on their United Way pledge form that they want their money to be designated to a specific organization.

United Way Agencies in the Yankee Clipper Council Service Area

  • At the start of the last decade, in the year 2000, our Yankee Clipper Council United Way revenue was $212,777 from six different United Ways in Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.  Unfortunately, those United Way’s have stopped funding the Yankee Clipper Council in their traditional allocation process and have dissolved our partnership.  By last year, 2009, our United Way revenue was down to $11,454…less than 1% of our total council revenue budget.

  • The only money now supporting the Yankee Clipper Council from United Ways comes through donor designated gifts.  Donors to the United Way can “designate” Yankee Clipper Council to receive their United Way contribution.  The United Way will process the donation, and keep an administrative fee (usually around 15%...varying depending on different United Ways) and then the remainder of the donation is sent to the Yankee Clipper Council.  Of course, donors can send their gift directly to the Yankee Clipper Council to avoid having the administrative fee deducted from their donation.

  • After a series of mergers and consolidations, there are three United Ways remaining in the Yankee Clipper Council footprint:

The Yankee Clipper Council also receives a few donor designated United Way gifts from other states across the country, many of which come from former Scouts, camp staffers and friends who have moved out of this area.  We appreciate the support of these donors.
