Evan Michael Todd
Columbine High School Hero
Biographical Background
Evan Michael Todd: Evan was the first student shot in the library. After realizing that they had not killed him, he was the
last survivor to talk with the killers in the library and talk them out of murdering him. Incurring shotgun wounds to the face,
neck and back, Evan was able still to maintain a clear and thoughtful mind. After escaping from the library, Evan's character
allowed him to save his own life and help save the lives of two other students. Evan carried a wounded handicap student out of the
line of fire to the safety of a Jefferson County Sheriff's patrol car. After coming across another seriously injured student who
was shot in the neck, face, arm and leg (severing an artery), Evan administered first aid to keep the student alive and conscious
until he could be transported by the emergency responders to the hospital. While caring for the student, Evan also described
accurately to the police the two gunmen, their current location in the school and their weapons. Despite his injuries, he also
helped the police load and unload injured student's from patrol cars immediately outside the building. As a fellow student stated,
Evan "also did everything in his power to keep fellow students around him calmed & reassured".
The National Court of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America awarded Evan Todd the
Honor Medal.
Since the Columbine Massacre, Evan has spoken literally coast to coast across
America to over a hundred public and private high schools, church groups, businesses and Boy Scouts of America Councils. Some of
his engagements have included the Crystal Cathedral in California, the Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America,
Boston, New York, throughout California, the 2001 National Boy Scouts of America Jamboree at Fort AP Hill in Virginia and the
Colorado House & Senate.
Evan was a varsity football and wrestling member and is a senior at Columbine High
School. He placed 5th in the state in wrestling and was awarded "The Spirit of Columbine" award for his positive
representation of the school and peers in attitude, behavior and demeanor and setting a positive example to the youth of his
community. United States Senator Wayne Allard has entered both his speeches, to the general public and to the Boy Scouts of America
into The Congressional Record.
On April 20th 2001 the Colorado State Legislature Honored him with a
Commendation from both the House & Senate as well as by the New York State Legislature. (Side note: interesting that New York State
recognized him…). In addition, he is a recipient of the prestigious Young American Award for 2001 from the Boy Scouts of America
National Board of Directors. (Only 5 per year are awarded out of 300+ BSA Councils)
He recently traveled to Europe this fall to share his message. He was also invited
to Eufurt Germany to spend time with the victims of there terrible school shooting and has been invited numerous times to New York
City and has spent time with the Firemen who were victims of the WTC terrorist massacre. Currently, Evan is attending Red Rocks
Community College in Denver and continues sharing his very important message. Terrorism, whether domestic or foreign, needs to be
clearly understood, as well as its origin. |
